12 Days of Christmas, Day 2 – Joni Sensel

And on Day 2 of our 12 Days of Christmas we have Joni Sensel who lives in Greenwater, WA, USA. Joni is the author of fantasy/adventure novels for younger readers and also picture books. Her latest title is The Farwalker’s Questfrom Bloomsbury.Joni’s is a beautifully touching and heart-warming Christmas memory.

Joni’s Christmas Memory

My very favourite Christmas memory is from some years ago when I was training in martial arts. There was a woman in my kickboxing class who I sparred with and liked but was a bit intimidated by. Now a police officer, she was divorced and her two daughters lived with their dad in another state. She’d planned to fly the girls in for Christmas with financial help from her own mum, but realised a few weeks beforehand that ticket prices go up a lot around the holidays and she couldn’t afford it. She was clearly very disappointed, and her life was rough enough as it was.

I figured — what the heck. I couldn’t afford two tickets, either, but I could cover one ticket for my sparring buddy to go see her daughters instead. At the time, internet tickets were still uncommon and I went to a travel agent, who gave me a pretty weird look when I didn’t know the last name of the person I was buying the ticket for. I had to call the dojo to ask. (Good thing I didn’t need her passport number, too.) I gave the ticket to one of our instructors and asked him to play Santa so I could be anonymous. (I hope she isn’t reading this.) I still get teary thinking about her reaction — and his. I always buy Giving Tree presents or adopt a family or supply Toys for Tots, but I wish I could put frosting on somebody’s Christmas at that level every year!
