Look at my Desk! Anne Spudvillas

Time now for Look at My desk – My Creating Space to once again get out there after the posts about my trip around the state. And so … here is the wonderful Anne Spudvilas. Anne was also at Ipswich Literature Festival and so we were able to spend quite a lot of time chit chatting. What a thrill it was to hang out with her too. Anne creates the most gorgeous picture books, well that is what i knew her for but now I find out her creations are also other gorgeous art works.

I work in a shared studio in St. Kilda (Victoria) – 12 artists in individual spaces. Mine is a large room with a big window – I need natural light for the tonal nature of my work. It also has a large storeroom attached, great for throwing in everything I don’t want to look at. This year I’ve worked at many different desks during residencies at Varuna Writer’s Residence, the Art Vault in Mildura, and while house sitting for four different friends for periods from 1 to 3 weeks at a time. I don’t use a lot of materials at any one time but I couldn’t possibly store all the art materials, large canvases, my beloved dresses and masses and masses of paper in my apartment nearby. Studio space is a haven, although procrastination about getting there is always a problem.
My art materials include charcoal, watercolour, pencil and I do a lot of printmaking at another studio, the Australian print workshop in Fitzroy (http://www.australianprintworkshop.com/)

This is my main desk, but I tend to move around and fill up every horizontal surface with paper, roughs, cups of coffee, etc. walls too

My studio from the other direction – the original cover art from The Race (my first picture book) on the wall.
Recent work – a hand coloured etching done at the print workshop ‘Polka Dottie’ 20 x 25cm and a charcoal drawing done at my residency at the Art Vault in Mildura in July/August (1012 x 760 cm) are seen below …

… that shows my two desks and studio space at the Art Vault, small monoprints and large drawings on the wall.

I’m currently completing the artwork for a picture book for Allen & Unwin.

I can think of quite a few people who would love Anne’s creating space (and her storage rooms too).

Do have a look for Anne’s latest book:

Night School, Isobelle Carmody (Penguin)
