New York, New York – Day 7

(Just a little late is this post)
And the conference does really begin today … and this was one of the highlights.

It’s HAPPY DAYS time. Henry Winkler really is a lovely guy. And the ovation he received was … as expected. He spoke some really beautiful words about his upbringing and his learning and how he evolved into the writing that now has been created.

Other highlights … there were workshops and panels, including the art of illustration, the writing craft, creating picture books, agents discussions, sessions on revision, art, different fictions, as well as keynotes from folks like Chris Crutcher, Cassandra Clare and much more. See the programme here.

In between dropping in to sessions we squeezed in a stroll around the streets …

… and very smokey hotdog (which i haven’t eaten yet) and also that ball that is so famous at New Year.

Anther evening SCBWI feast … the GALA Cocktail party … some of us thought we might need to zap out and gather some food afterwards … but that didn’t happen. There was a beautiful sweet potato mash topped with caviar, greens and sliced turkey, oh and pizza, potato mash  (again) and lots more. (We were filled quite wonderfully well).

This was followed by the gathering of the International members. This is a really important gathering with the other international SCBWI folk – we chatted about some specific issues, our various meetings, the international conferences like our upcoming Bologna gathering and Asian Festival of Children’s Content and of course SCBWI Summer Conference in LA. I took along a bag of Aussie sweets and the German crew brought chocolates but Kirsten and Donna certainly outdid themselves by dressing in National costume … they have set a precedent!
