Look at my Desk – Jen Storer

Another fortnight and another look into the creative space and the desk (well there are actually two creative spaces and two desks) of Jen Storer. I recently read Jen’s latest title Truly Tan (loved it of course) and so asked her to send me her words about her creative space. And as you see she is another creator who loves sticking bits of paper and things on the walls around her creative space! What a buzz to have Jen here ….

I am fortunate enough to have two creative spaces, one at home and one at the Abbotsford Convent, which is eleven minutes away (as the crow flies).

At home, I work in a tiny sunroom. It’s actually an enclosed veranda at the back of our cottage. It has no insulation. The floor slopes and my chair drifts south as I’m writing. But I love this little space. I plaster whatever I want on the walls, anything that inspires me or relates in the most obscure way to what I’m cooking up. Most of my initial creation takes place here. Now that my kids are independent and there is no school run, I roll out of bed around 7am and work in my pyjamas (or yoga gear) till about 2.30pm. Then I get dressed, put on some lipstick and toddle across the road to the local café. I drink coffee and read through what I have written. Then I skip back home, all fired up on caffeine and chemical confidence and start writing again. I stop sometime between 7pm and 10pm.

That’s the home routine. But I can’t maintain this. I become a bit obsessive when I work from home. Also, if I don’t monitor myself, I become neurotic, running around muttering like Woody Allen. That’s why I have a space at the convent. I do most of my rewriting and editing there. For several years I had a single room. I now share a large room with three other women—two writers and a film producer. It’s wonderful to share the creative journey with others. For me it’s crucial to have a ‘real world’ work place and to be part of a like-minded community. It keeps me vital, cajoles me out of myself and inspires me in the most surprising ways.
