Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2013 – Day 3

Today was jammed packed … starting with an exceptionally long breakfast meeting with Anushka Ravishankar (RA India) with lots of plotting and planning for India and then finishing tonight with the SCBWI Industry dinner – loooooong day!

Prelunch was a panel with Nury Vittachi and Norm Jorgensen all about Humour … what fun that was! We littered our presentations with jokes and puns and comical incidents and then interjected during each other’s presentations with quips and jokes. There was much mirth and joviality, as there should be with a presentation on humour. We also chatted about writing styles and preparations of manuscripts and bits and pieces about book publications!

Over lunch another meeting, SCBWI related, and then the final session for me this year moderating a panel on Malaysian digital creations.

Tonight’s activity was our SCBWI Industry dinner. A few talks and speeches and for me a super highlight – the launch of Water where i was able to say a few words, (thank you again Kenneth) and read the text out loud. Talk about nervous – I sure was, never having read Water in public before! Thank you to Susanna for the gorgeous work you did for my words … and for the original art that is going to be hanging on my wall at home very soon.

AFCC is a very different and improved character to the one I first encountered four years ago. It is evolving and improving and there are more changes to come. Hopefully it will continue developing so that it will become the Bologna of Asia, taking Asian literature to the world.

So AFCC 2013 is done and dusted. Now for Manila.

  2. Your reading of ‘Water’ was lovely, Chris. It is a beautiful book and I am proud to add a copy of it to my overflowing picture book collection. 🙂 I’m only sorry I didn’t think to have you sign it.

My experience as a first-time AFCCer was AMAZING! I would return in a heartbeat…even with 24+ hours of flight time each way…the people were incredible and the sessions were enlightening. 🙂 Great thanks to the NBDCS for their support of creators of exceptional content for children.
