Another jam packed day filled with keynotes and workshops and lots and lots of talking.
The conference day started with a breakfast gathering for the RAEs – chit chatting about SCBWI – but that was brief = the first keynote was being delivered as we were still chuffing down breakfast! An editors’ panel discussing Hits and Evergreen titles was followed by the Mac Barnett‘s talk that once again had listeners rolling in the aisles (or nearly). there were even phone messages recorded on the whale answering machine … tied in with his Blue Whale title. This talk was all about wonder and was wonderful. Morning workshops were followed by lunch and keynotes and more workshops.

A huge component of SCBWI is the discovery of new creative talent and for illustrators that is often revealed on the second night at this conference at the Portfolio Showcase Reception. It is absolutely mind boggling what some of these illustrators are able to create. The artwork is exquisite and intricate and so refined … many times we are asking why aren’t these people yet published? The reason of course is that they are yet to be discovered and that happens so wonderfully well on this evening. The Plaza Pavilion which on the previous night hosted the PAL showcase was transformed to a display gallery of wonderful work. The other wonder is how the judging panel decides the winner and honourees! Just adore pouring over these works of art!

After the event
And then there is the Saturday evening gala held outdoors as the sun sets on the grassed poolside. This year the theme was Black and White Ball complete with Black and White cookies for desert! Each year the summer conference has a poolside dinner and gala complete with attendees in costume, DJ and lots and lots of dancing – which I am able to avoid because of my two left feet. Some attendees dress up to the nines, some go casual, some go way over the top and it is most definitely a spectacle.

That done – successfully and joyfully, day two – Done!
More on the Carolinas later but Pam Vaughan (official photographer for the New England conference last weekend) has just sent me oodles and poodles of photos … so if you don’t want to see piccies of me in action – then look away now! There are photos of me with friends, of me panelling, photos […]
