Day Three Conferencing ….

Sunday began as it should – with the breakfast of a gathering of the International Regional Advisors discussing all things international of course. Again an early morning start for the conference with the Agents panel meant it was more rapid eating and chatting to make it in time for the first session.

And that was as much of the conference for Sunday morning as I got to see for the rest of the time I was showing a reporter and photographer from the Los Angeles bureau of the Xinhua news agency (I think it was) around the conference and interviewing authors and illustrators, agents and publishers and winners and telling all things SCBWI of course.

As well as the Saturday night pool party, the Sunday Golden Kite Luncheon is a four star annual event. Here the four Golden Kite winners are announced and they receive their statues. But it is also the time for announcing the Member of the Year – the award I received in 2010. Congrats to the recipient this year – the wonderful Alexis O’Neill. Like her predecessors she was totally surprised but unlike her predecessors Alexis was encouraged by Lin to sing on stage and so she led us all in a rousing Sea Shanty!

All too soon the afternoon whizzed by with workshops and more keynotes until the final event – the autograph party and as usual it was mega with much signing being undertaken – so much so that we took over the ballroom foyer as well as a room! Authors scribble words but those illustrators always create wonderful additional works of art in the books that they sign so the queues for these folks were enormous.

Day three – done and the conference is over with the all-day workshops and the wrap party still remaining … and after today, I have very very sore feet!

This is only the tip of the iceberg of what went on at the conference … do have a look at the SCBWI Conference Blog. There’s way much more.
