It Does Begin …

The gathering is huge. The hotel is packed and the laughter is coming thick and fast …

And that is especially so when there are speakers of the calibre of Jon Scieszka (creator of the Stinky Cheese Man and other totally warped titles) who was talking about writing for kids, about being subversive (like the audience who we are the readers of our books) and about writing the books that makes kids go argh! Oh and he did mention too about not listening to all the advice that is spoken at the conference – after his! He is wonderfully crackers. Just check out his website.

Laurie Halse Anderson (New York TImes best selling author), using great visuals implored attendees to tell the story that is in our heart … not the story created to fit in with current trends (with a well spat out s at the end). She keeps her rejections letters (I knew I wasn’t crazy) although she has laminated one of hers!

Workshops and more keynotes and more workshops and more keynotes and then the PAL book sale. Thankfully Candlewick were able to send copies of the US edition of Python for me to sell. And like at home there are people who as soon as they saw the title and the cover picture they gave the book a wide berth! They obviously were taught the wrong things about pythons!

The last official activity for the evening was a gathering of the attending international members where we chatted about the  happenings in our regions at the same time as consuming the packets of Tim Tams that I carried over from OZ (more room now in my bags) and then it was supper!

Also spent today bumping into and chatting with many folks that I have met over the eight or nine years that I have been coming to the conference. This is an amazing group of talented and creative folk and super fun folk with so many tales to tell.

Day 1 – done.
