Sunday in New York City

Today was a day of eating and meeting folks, of wandering the streets and exploring parts of this area that we have not walked along before.

Breakfast began at the Morgan Library dining room with Jill and Bob (professors from Purdue University where I used to work – How short sighted of Purdue to remove the picture book component from the education classes. Reading starts not with tests but with picture books … and the family). Back to the hotel room but not before we stopped to have a look at the Indian parade celebrating Indian Independence day. It was noisy and loud and it sure looked like the folks were having a lot of fun! Loved seeing the national costumes and the Indian flags and bagpipes interspersed with traditional Indian sounds!

A quick bit of shopping (yes, Bini is shopping) and then it was time to meet Warren and Ellen in the hotel lobby. Warren is the creator of Children’s Technology Review – the monthly review publication sent as a PDF newsletter — modeled in the spirit of Consumer Reports — designed to summarize products and trends in children’s interactive media and it has NO advertising content. But before we began strolling Warren gave me a Dust or Magic sweatshirt – awesome! How did he know?! Dust or Magic is Warren’s amazing camp that pulls together reviewers, designers and researchers with the creative folk who design the digital product. It’s way cool and so vital.

We began strolling and ended up arriving at Maddison Ave which was closed for a market fair. Perfect … so that took us for a long wander – until we four were getting hurry and detoured via a coffee shop … does anyone do great coffee here in New York?

Dropping Warren and Ellen at Bryant Park – which for me is always amazing to see because i am usually here in the winter time and see Bryant Park as the ice skating rink – we then headed towards the United Nations Building (no flags flying) and finally back to our hotel for a collapsing night! The feet were a tad sore!
