15th Winter Conference Day 2

And more SCBWI Winter conference.

Day 2 continued with two wonderful keynotes and a great panel on the Art of Picture Books under the direction of Arthur Levine – I was able to gather a smattering of this session. And Day 2 was also the announcement of the various awards including the Tomie dePaola Award, and Portfolio Showcase Awards. Wow – how talented are these folk.

Tomie discussing his award

Tomie spoke about his award which he initially set up for 5 years but now is ongoing and also how it is not just about the art but how the entrants handle an assignment – that he set of course! This year’s assignment was to illustrate the line A sneeze is a breeze in your nose from the new book that he created with Lin. And 200 entries later the winner was Akiko White. Her entry was scrumptiously amazing (I presume). She created it in CAKE! It did look stunning!

And Tomie is amazing – this year is his 50th year in kids publishing and more than 200+ books have his name emblazoned on them!

The Portfolio Showcase Award was also announce and this just shows the value of persistence. Lori Nichols the winner has been runner up a number of times but this year it was her chance to shine!

The Jane Yolen Mid list grant and also the Student Scholarship Awards were announced which were then followed by keynotes and panels. Then it was TIME … time for the autograph party. Hundreds upon hundreds of books are sold and signed and snuffled away into prized possessions!

Now the 15th Winter conference is done. A board meeting for me and then it’s over and out till the Summer Conference in Los Angeles in August.

Lots of networking. Lots of invigorating art. Lots of fun. Lots of terrifically stimulating keynotes and panels, and definitely a wonderful time catching up with glorious friends from around the world.

More from Sunday @ the Farm

As well as being buzzed by once again visiting the ‘farm’ buildings I was so thrilled to be able to visit the grave of my Chinese grandparents. My grandfather’s brothers and spouses are also buried here on this site. As with Chinese beliefs there are also special places for the spirits too. Now, one of […]
