The Summer Conference

It’s a funny thing these conferences. You plan on attending a conference full of workshops and keynote sessions but sometimes things just happen to get in the way. Take for instance the current gathering for the Summer SCBWI conference. I did plan on sitting in on many sessions but crazy hah! I have been in meetings and gatherings at all sorts of times throughout the conference, although a few gatherings I did get to attend.

For a full run down of the conference and the many keynotes and sessions vista the official SCBWI conference blog: http://scbwiconference.blogspot.com.

There are also a few permanent fixtures on the Summer Conference calendar and these include, the PAL book sale, the Golden Kite Luncheon (congratulations to my lovely friend Ellen Hopkins who was announced member of the year, the award I received in 2010); the portfolio display (so many amazing illustrators); the gala party which this year was themed to celebrate Tomie dePaola’s 80th birthday – a night in Italy!; and various socials, including our International Social.

And what a thrill. After a morning meeting to discuss Bologna 2016 (and we have some wonderfully exciting plans in store for that) I am up on the stage during the Golden Kite Luncheon announcing the winner of our BiG Dorothia Rohner. It now is a fixture on the announcement calendar at the luncheon.

Other highlights from this gathering included, hearing Tomie on Skype, and Judy Blume speaking. She reminded us to stay strong with words like “Do not let anyone discourage you. If they try, get angry, not depressed.” And from Tomie: “Don’t ever try to illustrate something you don’t like.” And because he was unable to be with us Lin chatted to Tomie via the mysteries of the internet (how glorious) that included a set of lightning fast questions including – Tomie’s favourite musical; his favourite classical artist, his favourite saint, and favourite pizza, and more. of course for these answers to these questions and many more you just have to see the conference blog.

It really is a magical time!
