Hello to all the students and teachers at the Ahlcon International School. At the last minute I was able to squeeze in a quick and very fleeting visit to them and I was so glad that I did! What a wonderful school. The students and teachers must have really wanted to see me because this was a Saturday morning event and not part of the usual weekly programme. A car arrived for me at the hotel and then a lightning fast trip to the school followed. Inside I was greeted with an installation created just for my visit and of course a lovely welcome sign. After photos and a chat to the delightful Principal Ashok Padey – who made sure he truncated my programme – I was escorted around the school for a quick look at the facilities (they have a super school library with great books on the shelves) and into the hall where a wonderful collective of students and staff were waiting for me.
A senior student presented a terrific exploration of some of the classic children’s titles – even those I remember reading – and yes I did read the Nancy Drew series as well as the Hardy Boys – and then to the stage I was called to participate in the triple reading of Water. Again it was glorious hearing my Water in Hindi and Tamil. and read with such expression. I think we were having an expression read off – trying to see who could read Water with the most feeling! I talked for a little while and then a presentation of lovely gifts was followed by High Tea before I was back into the taxi, hotel bound.
So thrilled I was able to squeeze in Ahlcon. I love your school. I do hope they keep on reading and sharing the pleasure of books … and having fun with all their writing!
